Taking responsibility with plastic credits

Plastic Credits give waste a value again - and companies can take responsibility.

What exactly are plastic credits?

At everwave, we use waste collection boats to collect waste from rivers and waterways before it ends up in the sea. And this is where the plastic credit system comes into play: one plastic credit corresponds to one kilogram of waste that we remove from rivers on behalf of companies. We are not the only ones to use the term plastic credits – in the cleanup industry, this is the term for what we do. Various parties are currently working on a general definition and standards for plastic credits – for example, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development is also working on the definition of general standards.

During our cleanups, we don’t just collect plastic, but everything that doesn’t belong in the water. Depending on the type of waste, we assign it its own recycling process. In our own software, we can assign a number to every single kilogram of waste – so every credit can be tracked and we can show exactly where the waste comes from.

So for every euro a company spends, we collect one kilogram of waste from rivers around the world – the equivalent of one plastic credit. This gives the collected plastic waste a value again. Of course, there are different ways and forms of a Plastic Credit partnership: from a one-off purchase of Plastic Credits to a long-term partnership in which Plastic Credits are purchased regularly, anything is possible.

What is the impact of a plastic credit partnership?

By purchasing plastic credits, companies can take direct responsibility. These partnerships help ensure the long-term funding of cleanup projects, thereby enabling the collection and processing of plastics that are already polluting the environment.

This also includes building local waste management infrastructure in areas where no such systems currently exist – implementing them there is crucial. In addition, new jobs can be created and sustained in the long term, both in Germany and at the project sites. Plastic credits are directly linked to the waste collected and the specific project locations, allowing companies to generate a tangible impact.

  1. Determine mechanism and quantity: Together we define individual goals and wishes. The campaigns can be individually adapted to the company – for example, linked to the sale of the company’s own products or a service.

  2. Conclusion of contract: It is determined how much waste is to be collected together and at what interval the collection should take place. This can be monthly, quarterly or annually.

  3. High-quality social media content: As a partner, the company receives high-quality, exclusive content, press and social media material for communication.

  4. Reporting: The company reports the number of kilograms that we are allowed to collect at set intervals. To do this, we send each company a link via which the figures can be easily reported.

  5. Joint communication: In the case of a long-term partnership, we present the partner accordingly on our channels – via social media, newsletters and the website.

  6. Collection: Waste is regularly collected during the cleanup missions.

  7. Waste collection certificate: For the amount of waste collected, the company receives a transparent waste collection certificate stating the exact location of the collection and the amount of waste collected.

  8. New content once a quarter: Each partner is regularly provided with new information and content from the projects.
