World Oceans Day: Together for the oceans
Every year on June 8, we celebrate World Oceans Day, an event that reminds us of the importance of the oceans. Not only are they a habitat for countless species, they also play a crucial role in the global climate and economy. However, our oceans are threatened by overfishing, climate change and, above all, increasing pollution.
The importance of our oceans
The oceans cover more than 70 % of the Earth’s surface and are responsible for more than half of the oxygen we breathe. They play a crucial role in regulating the climate and are home to an incredible variety of plants and animals. The biodiversity in the oceans is invaluable. The oceans are home to millions of species, many of which are still undiscovered. They not only provide food and resources, but also contribute to the health of the entire planet. The oceans are important for tourism and contribute to the economic stability of many countries. Given this central role, we should not only consider the oceans as resources, but also recognize them as the valuable ecosystem that they are.
World Oceans Day: a call to action
World Oceans Day is an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of the oceans and reflect on the actions needed to protect them. This day reminds us that protecting the oceans should not be limited to World Oceans Day. Every day is an opportunity to take action and make a difference. Protecting the oceans requires continuous commitment and action. By making sustainable choices, using resources more consciously and educating others about the importance of the oceans, we can make a positive long-term impact.
How you can contribute to marine conservation
There are many ways in which each of us can contribute to protecting the oceans. Even small steps in everyday life make a difference: avoiding plastic by using reusable bags, bottles and containers is a simple start. Consuming consciously means choosing products that are sustainable and environmentally friendly and reducing the consumption of fish and seafood or looking for sustainable products. Education and awareness also play an important role: by sharing our knowledge about the threats to the oceans, we can motivate other people to take action too. Every action counts, and together we can improve the state of our oceans.
Our contribution to marine protection
Ocean pollution, particularly plastic pollution, has increased dramatically in recent decades. Millions of tons of plastic end up in the sea every year, much of it carried into the sea by rivers. These waste streams have a devastating impact on marine life, human health and the environment as a whole.
At Everwave, we are actively committed to protecting the oceans. With our waste collection boats, we collect waste from rivers to prevent it from entering the sea. The collected material is then recycled using environmentally friendly processes and we also raise public awareness. We organize long-term, holistic cleanup projects in countries such as Serbia, Thailand and Cambodia and ensure clean waters there.
