Albania is known for its breathtaking mountain ranges in the north and its long sandy beaches along the Adriatic and Ionian coasts. Yet behind this picturesque scenery lies a growing environmental challenge: plastic pollution. Rivers, coastal areas, and ultimately the Mediterranean Sea are increasingly affected by plastic waste, making the country one of the key hotspots for plastic leakage in the Western Balkans.
A Beach Covered in Plastic: Pollution at the Ishmi Delta
A remote sandy beach framed by mountains in the distance may seem like a postcard-perfect destination. However, the sound of plastic crunching beneath your feet quickly shatters the illusion. At the Ishmi Delta, where the Ishmi River flows into the Mediterranean Sea, large amounts of waste cover the shoreline as far as the eye can see.
The Ishmi is considered one of Albania’s most polluted rivers. Around one-third of the country’s population lives within its catchment area, including residents of the capital city, Tirana. Industrial facilities, urban settlements, and inadequate waste management contribute significantly to the river’s pollution through plastic waste, untreated wastewater, and other contaminants.
As a result, the Ishmi transports large quantities of waste directly into the Mediterranean, contributing to the region’s growing marine plastic pollution crisis.
The Root Cause: Insufficient Waste Management Infrastructure
One of the main drivers of plastic pollution in Albania is the lack of adequate waste management infrastructure. In many areas, systems for waste collection, sorting, and recycling remain limited or nonexistent.
As a consequence, waste is often disposed of illegally, ending up in open dumpsites, along roadsides, in rivers, or being burned in uncontrolled conditions.
Financial constraints further exacerbate the problem. While some municipalities are able to collect waste, they often lack the resources needed for proper sorting, recycling, and treatment. Without these essential components, establishing a functioning circular economy remains a significant challenge.
The situation is particularly critical in rural areas, where limited access to waste collection services and long distances to disposal sites frequently result in waste being discarded directly into the environment or nearby waterways.
Environmental and Health Impacts
Uncontrolled waste disposal has far-reaching consequences for both the environment and public health. Rivers, groundwater, soils, and marine ecosystems are all affected by pollution.
Across parts of the Balkans, environmental contamination from heavy metals and other hazardous substances remains a serious concern. These pollutants can accumulate in water and soil, enter food chains, and ultimately pose risks to human health.
Plastic pollution in the Mediterranean further threatens biodiversity by damaging fragile ecosystems and endangering wildlife in both coastal and freshwater environments.
Why Cleaning the Ishmi River Matters
The Ishmi River is one of the key pathways through which plastic waste enters the Mediterranean Sea. Pollution in the river therefore has consequences that extend far beyond Albania's borders.
In addition to plastic waste, the river is affected by industrial effluents, household waste, and agricultural runoff. Particularly concerning is the interaction between plastic debris and harmful pollutants, which can create long-term environmental and health risks.
For this reason, improving waste management systems and implementing targeted river cleanup initiatives are essential steps toward reducing pollution and aligning with broader European environmental standards.
everwave's Cleanup Efforts in Albania
Many areas surrounding the Ishmi Delta are difficult to access, making large-scale infrastructure projects challenging to implement. To address this issue, everwave focuses on direct plastic collection from Albanian waterways.
Our operational cleanup site is located in Kukës in northern Albania. There, a waste collection boat operates on Lake Fierza along the Drin River, an important source of water and hydropower for the country.
To support these efforts, a Zero-Waste Center has been established near the cleanup site. Collected waste is sorted, compacted, and prepared for further processing. Recyclable materials, particularly PET plastics, are transported to Tirana for recycling.
At present, non-recyclable waste is disposed of at a secured landfill, as alternative treatment infrastructure is not yet available locally.
Looking Beyond Cleanup: Building Long-Term Solutions
The situation in Albania illustrates how closely marine plastic pollution is linked to deficiencies in land-based waste management systems. Rivers such as the Ishmi act as major transport routes, carrying waste from inland communities into the Mediterranean Sea.
While cleanup operations are essential for preventing plastic from reaching the ocean, long-term success depends on strengthening waste management infrastructure, improving collection and recycling systems, and supporting sustainable circular economy solutions.
Only through a combination of prevention, cleanup, and infrastructure development can plastic pollution be reduced sustainably and the Mediterranean ecosystem protected for future generations.
