Plastic waste degrades extremely slowly, remaining in soils, waterways, and the atmosphere for centuries in the form of microplastics.
How Do Microplastics Enter the Environment?
Microplastics find their way into the environment through many different pathways.
One source is cosmetics and personal care products, where plastic particles are used for specific functions. During activities such as showering or brushing teeth, these particles enter wastewater systems. Wastewater treatment plants often cannot completely filter out such tiny particles, allowing them to escape into the environment.
Synthetic clothing is another major contributor. Every time garments made from polyester, nylon, or acrylic are washed, tiny fibers are released. These microfibers are so small that they can easily pass into wastewater and eventually reach rivers and oceans. Studies have shown that a single wash cycle can release up to 700,000 fibers.
Tire wear is also a significant source of microplastic pollution. As vehicles travel, tiny particles are generated and dispersed into the air or washed into waterways by rain. In addition, improperly managed plastic waste contributes to the problem. Over time, environmental factors break discarded plastic into ever-smaller fragments.

One concerning study concluded that people may ingest up to five grams of microplastics per week, roughly the weight of a credit card. Microplastics have also been detected in human blood, highlighting how widespread the issue has become.
What Risks Do Microplastics Pose to the Environment and Human Health?
The impacts of microplastics are significant.
In the environment, animals often mistake plastic particles for food. This can lead to digestive blockages, starvation, and even death. Microplastics can also disrupt important microorganisms in aquatic ecosystems, potentially altering entire ecological systems over time.
For humans, microplastics may pose health risks as well. The particles can carry harmful substances such as plasticizers and flame retardants, some of which are suspected of being carcinogenic or hormonally active. While the full effects of microplastics on human health are still being studied, evidence suggests they may cause inflammation and tissue damage.
Beyond environmental and health concerns, microplastic pollution also has economic consequences. Contaminated waterways and declining fish populations can negatively affect fisheries and tourism. At the same time, increasingly complex and costly water treatment technologies are required to remove microplastics from drinking water.
How Can We Reduce Microplastics?
Although microplastics are a global challenge, small everyday actions can make a difference:
Choose microplastic-free cosmetics: Look out for ingredients such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), or polystyrene (PS), which may indicate the presence of microplastics. Whenever possible, opt for certified natural cosmetics.
Reduce synthetic fibers: Choose clothing made from natural materials such as cotton or linen. Special laundry bags and filters can help capture microfibers during washing.
Cut down on plastic consumption: Avoid single-use plastics, choose reusable alternatives, and ensure plastic waste is properly disposed of and recycled.
Reduce tire wear: Limit unnecessary car trips and maintain your vehicle regularly to minimize tire abrasion.
New Technologies in the Fight Against Microplastics
Innovative technologies are playing an important role in reducing microplastic pollution. Wastewater treatment plants are increasingly adopting advanced filtration systems capable of removing smaller plastic particles from wastewater. At the same time, startups and researchers are developing biodegradable alternatives to conventional plastics, including materials made from algae and fungi.
