What clothes our bodies wear today often become waste after only a short period of use. Instead of being reused or recycled, many garments end up in landfills, rivers, or the natural environment, with serious consequences for ecosystems and communities.
Fast Fashion and the Rise of Disposable Clothing
Modern society produces and consumes clothing on an unprecedented scale. In fact, the world already manufactures far more clothing than is needed. If production stopped today, there would still be enough garments available to dress generations to come.
This overconsumption is driven by rapidly changing trends, constant product turnover, and a culture that increasingly treats clothing as a disposable commodity. The low prices offered by many fast fashion brands further fuel this cycle of excessive consumption.
The environmental consequences are immense. Clothing production requires vast amounts of water, generates significant greenhouse gas emissions, and relies on large quantities of chemicals. Many garments are discarded after being worn only a few times and eventually end up in landfills, rivers, or the environment.
The Environmental Impact of the Fashion Industry
The fashion industry is a major contributor to climate change, accounting for roughly ten percent of global carbon emissions. This exceeds the emissions generated by international aviation and makes textiles one of the world's most carbon-intensive industries.
A significant reason for this is the widespread use of synthetic fibers such as polyester, which are derived from fossil fuels. Their production is energy-intensive and generates substantial CO₂ emissions long before a garment reaches store shelves.
Water consumption is another major concern. Producing and dyeing textiles requires enormous quantities of water. For example, around 60 liters of water are needed to dye just one kilogram of yarn. In many production regions, polluted wastewater is discharged into rivers and waterways without adequate treatment, threatening aquatic ecosystems and local communities.
Clothing manufacturing also involves bleaching, dyeing, and printing processes that often rely on hazardous chemicals. Approximately one kilogram of chemicals can be used to produce a single kilogram of clothing. These substances endanger workers, contaminate waterways, and can be released into the environment through landfill disposal or uncontrolled burning.
The Myth of Clothing Donations
For years, many consumers have believed that donated clothing simply finds a second life in other parts of the world. However, reality paints a different picture.
Large volumes of second-hand clothing are shipped to countries in the Global South, where only a fraction can be resold or reused. Much of the remainder ends up in enormous textile dumps because local waste management systems are unable to handle the overwhelming quantities of imported clothing.
As a result, discarded garments accumulate in landfills, rivers, and coastal areas. Synthetic fabrics such as polyester gradually break down into microplastics, while chemicals leach into soils and groundwater or are released into the air when textiles are burned.
Fast Fashion and Unsafe Products
Concerns about fast fashion extend beyond waste and emissions. Investigations have repeatedly revealed that some ultra-fast fashion products contain substances that exceed regulatory safety limits.
Testing conducted by the Austrian environmental organization GLOBAL 2000 together with consumer protection experts found significant exceedances of EU thresholds in several garments from major ultra-fast fashion platforms. Among the detected substances were PFCA-related compounds, which can accumulate in the body and are associated with health risks, as well as excessive concentrations of plasticizers that may affect hormonal systems and reproductive health.
These findings raise important questions about product quality, consumer safety, and the environmental footprint of ultra-fast fashion business models.

Cambodia is a major production hub for the global textile industry. At the same time, the country is increasingly confronted with textile waste generated by overproduction and overconsumption elsewhere in the world.
Existing waste management infrastructure is often unable to cope with these growing volumes. As a result, large quantities of worn and unworn clothing end up in illegal dumpsites, along riverbanks, or directly in waterways. Rivers such as the Mekong increasingly become endpoints of global consumption patterns.
At everwave's cleanup operations in Cambodia, textile waste is a common sight. Analysis of the waste collected from the Mekong River shows that approximately 10% consists of textiles. Remarkably, around 70% of these textiles are still in good condition and could potentially have been worn for much longer. Instead, they entered waste streams while still usable.
The Need for Regulation
The world is producing far more clothing than consumers genuinely need. Vast quantities of garments enter global waste streams each year, not because they are damaged or unusable, but because they have become surplus products in an oversaturated market.
In response, environmental organizations and advocacy groups are increasingly calling for stronger regulation of fast fashion companies. Proposed measures include strengthening supply chain legislation and introducing regulations similar to France's proposed anti-fast-fashion law.
The French proposal aims to subject ultra-fast fashion providers to stricter advertising regulations and introduce financial penalties for low-quality products that quickly become waste. Although the proposal primarily targets non-EU companies, it represents an important step toward addressing the environmental and social impacts of the fast fashion industry.
Looking Ahead
Fast fashion has transformed clothing into a low-cost, high-turnover consumer product, but the environmental consequences are becoming increasingly visible. From excessive water use and carbon emissions to chemical pollution and textile waste, the true cost of cheap clothing is often paid by ecosystems and communities around the world.
Reducing these impacts requires a combination of responsible consumption, stronger regulations, improved recycling systems, and circular economy solutions that keep textiles in use for longer and out of rivers, oceans, and landfills.
